IUGG2019: Open Access IAG Symposia proceedings

Dear Colleagues,

From now on, all volumes in the IAG Symposia series will be Open Access,  which means that the primary mode of publication will be online (individual papers, and an e-book once all papers are finished). It is possible to get copies of the book printed, although there is an extra cost for this.

What this means for the authors is that the papers will be online and fully Open Access shortly after each paper is accepted, so that they don’t have to wait for the entire volume to be completed. All papers will eventually be searchable through the volume once the volume is finalised.

IAG will be paying the Open Access fees for volumes from the IAG Scientific Assemblies and General Assemblies. For other IAG-sponsored meetings, the organisers are expected to collect US $50 per participant (or equivalent in some currency) registered for the meeting to cover the cost of the volume. In this way, if you are planning any IAG-supported meeting and are interesting on publishing the proceedings, please contact us to provide you with more details.

Now, we are inviting you to submit your contributions presented at the IUGG2019 General Assembly. Because IAG pays the fees, this is a free Open Access paper for the authors. In order to define the number of pages per paper and the list of Associate Editors for the “Montreal Volume”, we kindly ask you to answer this e-mail as soon as possible with the title of the manuscript you plan to submit and the ID of the symposium where it was presented (please see list below). Paper submission deadline is September 15, 2019.

The IAG Symposia series is indexed in Web of Science (book by book) and in Scopus (as a series).

New IAG Inter-Commission Committee on “Geodesy for Climate Research” (ICCC)

During the IUGG General Assembly in Montreal the IAG Executive Committee (EC) established a new IAG Inter-Commission Committee on "Geodesy for Climate Research" (ICCC) to enhance the use of geodetic observations for climate studies. The goal is to establish a systematic and comprehensive approach among the various geodetic communities, but also to establish and foster links to the climate science.

Specific goals of the ICCC are

  • to deepen the understanding of the potential (and limitations) of geodetic measurements for the observation, analysis and identification of climate signals
  • to advance the development of geodetic observing systems, analysis techniques and data products regarding their sensitivity to and impact on Essential Climate Variables
  • to advance the improvement of numerical climate models, climate monitoring systems, and climate reanalysis efforts through incorporating geodetic observations
  • to stimulate scientific exchange and collaboration between the geodetic and the climate science communities
  • to make geodetic variables more user-friendly by sharing them publicly and explaining their usefulness

The activities of the ICC will primarily be carried out through its thematic working and study groups to be set up at the next IAG EC meeting in December. Furthermore, plans of the ICCC comprise the organization of a workshop series to intensify the exchange between different geodetic communities and the climate monitoring and modeling communities, the organization of related sessions at international conferences, and the establishment of links to other climate science related bodies within IUGG and beyond.

IAG Participation in the Ninth Session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management, United Nations Headquarters, New York, 7 - 9 August 2019

Also this year the meeting of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management UN-GGIM took place at the United Nations in New York from 7th to 9th August 2019. Besides the delegates of more than 100 UN member states, the IAG participated in "Observer Status". IAG was represented by the IAG Immediate Past President Harald Schuh, supported by the President of the IAG Zuheir Altamimi (as member of the French delegation), the GGOS Chair Richard Gross (as member of the US delegation), the IGS Director Allison Craddock, the IAG Secretary General Markku Poutanen (as member of the Finnish delegation), and the IGS Chair Gary Johnston (also Co-Chair of the UN-GGIM Subcommittee on Geodesy).

At the main sessions of UN-GGIM, IAG issued two highly regarded interventions with the following wording:

  • GGIM Agenda Item 5: Integrated Geospatial Information Framework: The International Association of Geodesy applauds the ongoing development of the Integrated Geospatial Information Framework, noting its potential to translate high-level strategic geospatial information concepts into practical implementation guidance. We note the potential for this Framework to develop, strengthen, and modernize national geodetic infrastructure and capacity building, especially in developing Member States.
  • GGIM Agenda Item 6: Global Geodetic Reference Frame: The International Association of Geodesy commends the work done by the Subcommittee on Geodesy, and emphasizes that its ongoing work is essential to determining a sustainable Global Geodetic Reference Frame. We note with appreciation the agreement on the adoption of the International Terrestrial Reference System – and its numerical realization, the International Terrestrial Reference Frame – for positioning and navigation applications, and as a reference for monitoring phenomena of global change. We also appreciate the ongoing development of an ISO International Standard for alignment to this Frame.

IAG encourages modernization of geodetic infrastructure, as well as development of Core Observatories, especially in developing regions.

We recognize that capacity building is an essential complement to infrastructural development, and applaud the efforts of the Subcommittee’s Working Group on Education, Training, and Capacity Building at the global, regional, and national levels.

Given the essential nature of appropriate coordination and capacity building, IAG encourages continuing the discussion on the creation of a Global Geodetic Centre of Excellence, under the auspices of UN-GGIM.

An important result of the UN-GGIM session on the Global Geodetic Reference Frame (GGRF) is the recommendation to establish a Global Geodetic Center of Excellence "under UN-GGIM auspices", which - in cooperation with IAG, GGOS, the international services of IAG and other international associations - promotes the global expansion of geodetic infrastructure and carries out measures on the subject of "Geodetic education and training", particularly in developing and emerging countries. This was strongly advocated in almost 30 interventions by UN member states.
