Chinese Annual Geodetic General Assembly (CAGGA) 2019 held in Guilin, China

The Chinese Annual Geodetic General Assembly 2019 was successfully held on September 4-6, 2019 in Guilin, China. This year’s assembly was jointly organized by the China National Committee of IAG (CNC-IAG) and the Geodesy and Navigation Committee of the Chinese Society for Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Cartography (CSGMC).

Nearly 600 participants including about 200 students from universities, institutes and administration departments all over the country gathered in the beautiful city of Guilin to attend this conference full of scientific inspirations. Academicians of Chinese Academy of Science, Prof. Junyong Chen and Prof. Yuanxi Yang, Prof. Yang Gao from University of Calgary, Prof. Peiliang Xu from Kyoto University and Prof. Zhenhong Li from Newcastle University attended the assembly. Academician Yuanxi Yang, Prof. Yamin Dang and Prof. Yang Gao were invited to deliver keynote speeches.

The general assembly is composed of the following four parallel sessions:

  • Precise positioning and reference frame;
  • Navigation, positioning and location based service;
  • Gravity field and vertical datum;
  • Geodetic monitoring and geodynamics.
3 keynote speeches and over 150 contributions out of more than 200 submissions were presented, which reflected the latest development and progress in the fields of GNSS navigation and positioning, gravity field and geoid modeling, geodetic data processing and earth dynamics in the past year.

Obituary

Rodrigue Blais (1941-2019)

Dr. Rodrigue (Rod) Blais, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geomatics Engineering at The University of Calgary, passed away on June 27 at age 77 after a short illness. Rod was part of the original team of faculty members who started the Division of Surveying Engineering in 1979 a The University of Calgary. He held a B.Sc. degree in mathematics from Loyola College (now Concordia), an M.A. in mathematics from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in surveying engineering from The University of New Brunswick. He worked for the Surveys and Mapping Branch of the federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in the 1970s where he was involved in photogrammetric and geodetic research and was the author of the well-known photogrammetric software Space-M. He taught many subjects in the department and conducted research in several areas, most recently in computational geodesy. He continued his involvement in the department and with the geodetic community after his formal retirement in 1996, through the teaching of graduate courses, advising students and with the Canadian Geophysical Union and its Geodesy Section. Rod was an avid hiker in the Rockies until shortly before his passing.
